I keep wanting to compare this film to two other French movies, Black Orpheus and Children of Paradise. It’s not that they have much in common, but they were the last two films I saw, so on with the similarities. First, there’s the French film directors taking on ‘locals dancing’ thing, of which there is much more in BO, of course. Next, there’s the guitar strumming and sense of inevitable tragedy thing. There’s a bar scene early on where a guy holds up a bottle over another guy and the nother guy pulls a gun on him saying, 'I don’t brawl like a stevedore.’ Course I’ve no idea what a stevedore is, but I think I get the point. Reminds me of the part in COP when Lacenaire says he doesn’t duel meaning he just kills you if it comes to that, sort of like the U.S. and the rest of the world. And so I’m now, what, two thirds of the way through, and I’m thinking God this movie is good. I wonder what will happen next, I really do. Besides, you just haven’t lived ’til you’ve seen a grown man swimming in crude oil.
