It’s basically like an NFL all-star game. It’s great to see all those players out there on the same field, but it’s not a real game. It’s fun, but it only has flashes of seriousness. And the hideous performances by the Mexican villagers is nearly insulting, even for an all-star game. It’s worth watching, however, as it gives you a deeper understanding and appreciation for what Kurosawa was able to do, and Peckinpah for that matter. The Wild Bunch, and just about any other western you've heard of does better with the theme of gunfighters facing death, glory and boredom. The Wild Bunch is not any other western.
