If you think Beauty and the Beast had a good story, you will love the Cocteau-Bresson film Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne. Shades of Clouzot at this early stage, before Bresson would veer off in his entirely unique direction.
Note: Criterion Copy has an essay by Truffaut, which is good, and David Thomson, which has insights, but is poorly written and occasionally flat wrong.
