Okay, now I think I know where Ang Lee is coming from with Crouching Tiger. This is a very good human drama. Whereas Crouching Tiger shows off China’s beautiful backside, this film provides a rich glimpse into modern Chinese culture. The plot development is simultaneously complex and simple, gradual and sudden, and believable yet difficult to swallow. Upon further reflection, the characters and their actions all hold water. I think this is a better movie than Crouching Tiger, if only because when it ended, I was left wanting more. When Crouching Tiger ended, I was already in the parking lot, and needed a new haircut. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes human beings. Yi-Yi is better though.
