Best in Show (2000)

Christopher Guest: Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman

Everyone uses www.moviefone.com don’t they? And notice how they have those little letter grades by fans and critics. Do you let those influence you? I do. I can’t help it. And that’s exactly why I am forced into this role of critic, very reluctantly I might add, because you can't help it either. Anyway, let us start comparing these little moviefone ratings against my Biblically proportioned opinion, and see what happens. Regarding Best in Snow, or as I call it, the only movie I bothered to see in October, moviefone Fans said B+ and Critics said A-, which gives the critics a clear victory, because this was, in fact, an A- film. By the way, your critic is a jealous critic, and you must not listen to anyone else, ever.

This movie is really funny. Don’t bother reading any reviews either after or especially before seeing it. They will add nothing and provide you with no additional insight. Don’t try to find out which actors are also the film’s writers and/or directors or who the hell is Parker Posey or any damn shit like that. Just shut up and go see the movie. If you liked Spinal Tap—if you saw Spinal Tap—then you'll like Best in Snow. Of course it’s not that good, but it’s pretty good. When I saw it, everyone in the theatre seemed to be laughing at just the right times, probably because it had just come out and only quality movie goers, who had been chomping at the bit, were there. I have lots of other stupid theories about things if you're interested. But seriously, there's nothing like a good, smart movie audience. It's an experience that makes you glad to be a fellow contestant in the great game show of life.
