If I'm the first person to tell you about Monty Python, then wow. For the other 99.9% of you, this is not an attempt to say anything new or useful about the best comedy group ever. It's just a reminder that they do have CD's out there. And they're pretty fun to listen to. So here are some of the ones I think are worth getting.
Monty Python Flying Circus Videos Are Here!
Another Monty Python CD (1971)
The early Python recordings were made specifically for audio. They are not just a bunch of sketches, but rather perfectly-crafted stories and bits that take full advantage of man's ability to hear sounds. What the hell am I talking about? I don't know. But this CD has the story of the Piranha Brothers, which is an absolute classic.
Monty Python's Previous Record (1972)
Brilliant. Must have. Same quality as Monty Python's Previous Record.
Monty Python Matching Tie and Handkerchief (1973)
This CD is the best example of the literary and intellectual side of Monty Python's comedy. It's packed top to bottom with brilliant material from the boys that once studied literary criticism at Oxford. One of the best.
Monty Python Live at City Center (1976)
Don't believe the reviews at Amazon on this one. It's great. The audience noise is not annoying. And the expletives that were added to appeal to the American audience are an interesting cultural variation/study and do not detract from the humor. It's a fun album with a lot of energy. Crunchy Frog alone is worth the whole disc.
Monty Python Live at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
Another fun and excellent live performance. Among the obvious hits are some lesser known gems like secret service and cocktail bar.
- Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album (1980)
Too many mediocre songs make this a good, but not essential CD. This review proves that I don't just blindly rave about everything.
Only three episodes on each disc? Too expensive? Whatever! As John McCain would say, "Get it, don't regret it." Unless your Anthony Lane.
